Photo-ID: Photographers and Scientists explore Identity

The complexity surrounding the construction of personal and social identity will be explored in Photo-ID, a major exhibition in Norwich City Centre, throughout August 2009. It will present the work of nine specially commissioned photographers, who will each visually explore issues around identity. Their work will be shown within a context that explores how recent information about the human genome and its variations affects how we think about identity, now and in the future. Photo-ID will be freely open to the general public, and will be accompanied by a full programme of ancillary educational activities, a book and this website.

Educational Programme:

There are five strands to our educational and public engagement programme for the Photo-ID project.

1.    The Teacher Scientist Network (TSN) has long experience of engagement with Norfolk schools and has an ongoing focus on keeping teachers up to date with current developments in science. They will work in the Summer term before the show with selected schools on some of the human genome related work, and will then run a twilight CPD event for 16 teachers in Sept 2009 on using PCR to study inheritance.  This will encourage wider application of PCR technology in practical A level biology teaching.  There is also relevance to art and design key stage 3 teaching and Citizenship and Health and we have alerted SAW about the project (a local charity partner to TSN, inspiring schoolchildren about science to develop ‘science, art and writing’ (SAW) projects in local schools. These bring together children, teachers, scientists, writers, artists and the local community, with science as the central theme).

2.   BBC Voices, the BBC story-telling and media training centre located within The Forum building, will be doing a project during the course of the exhibition, involving local children. More information will be presented here when the project has been fleshed out.

3.    Together with Paul Grace at Norwich University College of the Arts we held a one day practical and discussion workshop (see below for images) for their undergraduate and masters students who are specialising in photography.  This took place on Thursday 26th February 2009 and involved the expertise and practice of the commissioned photographers from the Photo-ID project after they had started on their projects and embarked on their research. A photo record of the day can be found below....

4.    We will hold a Public discussion session, Photographing Identity, downstairs at The Forum in the new 140 seat auditorium, The Curve, on Saturday 1st August 2009.  This will allow all ten of the photographers to talk and discuss their research and practice while they were creating the work for their show.  This will be widely advertised, open to the public, and will be held in the 140 seat auditorium that will, by that time, be installed downstairs in the Forum.

Details of all these partner organisations can be found on the Relevant Links page
